Climate change is no longer a future scenario. It is here now. In a stunning and comprehensive report issued today on www.globalchange.gov and reported in the NY Times, “Climate change, once considered an issue for a distant future has moved firmly into the present.” The implications for our society are grave and as the subject is debated in Washington and scientific circles, there will undoubtedly be more open discussion about the implications for marketers.
From the perspective of CSR and brand reputation it is time to consider the implications for how companies position their products, to what degree regional climate differences will impact sales patterns and how distribution concerns will need to factored into the supply chain. This is just the beginning of what I believe will become an important topic in marketing in the months and years ahead.
